Paying your bill, qualifying for aid.

Are you uninsured and need help paying your bill? If so, you may be eligible for charity care coverage.

If you have additional questions after reading the information below, please contact a friendly representative from Patient Financial Services:

Q: What healthcare services are eligible for charity care?

A: The following services are eligible for charity:

  • Emergency medical services provided in an emergency room setting.
  • Medical services for a condition that requires prompt treatment. These services prevent a dramatic decline in a patient's health.
  • Non-elective services provided in response to life-threatening circumstances in a non-emergency room setting.
  • Medically necessary services, defined by Medicare (services or items reasonable and necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of illness or injury).

Q: If I am uninsured and qualify, will I receive a discount?

A: If you qualify, the charges will be limited to the lowest negotiated rate from a private health plan for emergency and/or other medically-necessary care.

Q: Who is automatically eligible for charity care under this new law?

A: You must be a qualified individual to receive charity care. A qualified individual, as defined in the law, must:

  • Be uninsured. The patient has no level of insurance or third party assistance to assist with meeting his/her payment obligations.
  • Your family income must be 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) or less. For a family of four, this is equal to an annual household income of $57,625 or less for 2012.
  • The services provided must not be eligible for discount under the Colorado Indigent Care Program (CICP).

Q: How do I apply for charity care?

A: Each uninsured patient will receive an individual assessment of financial need. The assessment may include:

  • An application process. You will have to supply personal, financial and other information and documentation to ensure that you are eligible.
  • The use of external publically available data. This data gives information about a patient's or a patient's guarantor's ability to pay (like credit scoring).
  • Reasonable efforts by the hospital to explore other sources of payment and coverage from public and private payment programs and to assist patients to apply for such programs.
  • The patient's available assets and all other financial resources available to the patient.
  • A review of the patient's outstanding accounts receivable for prior services rendered and the patient's payment history.

Charity care is not a substitute for your own personal responsibility. We expect you to cooperate with the hospitals' procedures for obtaining charity or other forms of payment or financial assistance. We also expect you to contribute to the cost of your care based on your individual ability to pay.

The granting of charity is based on your individual financial need. It does not take into account age, gender, race, social or immigrant status, sexual orientation or religious affiliation.

We treat all patients with dignity and respect. Our belief in stewardship is reflected in the charity care application process, financial need determination and granting of charity.

Requests for charity will be processed promptly. Medical Center of the Rockies and/or Poudre Valley Hospital will notify the patient or applicant in writing within 30 days of receipt of a completed application.
