Confused about Compression?
One common misconception about digital mammography is that breast compression is no longer part of the examination. Compression is still a necessary part of digital mammography - and important for high quality breast imaging!
Compression increases image accuracy by:
- Causing breast tissue to be a of a more uniform thickness, which results in decreased radiation exposure and superior image quality.
- Keeping the breast still so that there is less risk of motion during the digital imaging, enabling suspicious areas to be more easily identified.
Please try to consider the brief and minimal discomfort as a way to achieve the most thorough results. And tell your imaging technologist if you feel more discomfort than you can handle. She can work with you to help you be as comfortable as possible.
