Higher education experts gather in Fort Collins to learn from PVHS
More than 300 educators from community colleges and universities across America have gathered in Fort Collins until August 3 to learn how to improve their organizations by listening to the experiences and advice of Poudre Valley Health System, recipient of the 2008 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award as one of the nation’s top performing organizations.

The Continuous Quality Improvement Network—an organization dedicated to improving higher education in the U.S.—is holding a 3-day national conference at the Hilton Hotel to gain insight from PVHS on improvement methods transferable from health care to higher education. During the afternoon of August 2, 240 of the 315 conference attendees will tour the Medical Center of the Rockies, a PVHS hospital in Loveland.

Priscilla Nuwash, president of the PVHS Center for Performance Excellence, a new consulting organization created by PVHS, said many similarities exist between health care and higher education.

“Many processes used by PVHS can be replicated in higher education and other sectors,” she said. “Organizations in all sectors need to address customer satisfaction, quality, work flow, staff satisfaction, and financial stability.”

Since receiving the 2008 award, PVHS has presented seminars and webinars throughout the nation to assist other organizations in learning how to make improvements using Baldrige methods.

“We help other organizations improve their products and services, delight their customers and workforce, and enhance their bottom line,” said Sonja Wulff, vice president of the PVHS Center for Performance Excellence.

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, created by congress in the 1980s, annually recognizes manufacturing, small business, service, education and healthcare organizations that demonstrate sustainable performance excellence. PVHS—the only healthcare organization in the West to ever receive the Baldrige award—was one of three organizations and the only healthcare organization to be presented the 2008 award.
