Flood and Peterson has contributed $50,000 to support construction of the University of Colorado Health cancer center in Fort Collins. The cancer center will provide patients in the community with one-door access to leading-edge cancer treatment, research, support and survivorship services.

“The cancer center initiative has been a shared vision of our community and our world-class hospital,” said Flood and Peterson president Chris Richmond. “We feel strongly that by supporting this project, we can help to relieve some of the tremendous burden that accompanies a cancer diagnosis, and provide a new platform for the state-of-the art cancer care that our hospital provides.”

Flood and Peterson has been a longstanding partner of the Poudre Valley Hospital Foundation, contributing more than $160,000 over the past 25 years to support health care in northern Colorado.

“Flood and Peterson’s generous gift to support the cancer center is helping us to make our vision for a hub of comprehensive cancer care a reality for our community,” said Dr. Matt Sorensen, oncology service line medical director for UCHealth’s northern region.

The $11 million two-story center center will be located on UCHealth’s Harmony Campus in the city’s southeastern area. Construction of the 30,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in 2014.

The center will adjoin the existing Cancer Center of the Rockies, one of the foremost oncology physician clinics in the region, as well as UCHealth's northern Colorado radiation oncology department, which underwent a $7.1-milllion expansion in 2011 to make room for a TrueBeam STx linear accelerator. The linear accelerator, regarded as the world’s most advanced technology for treating cancer and other potentially life-threatening illnesses, delivers targeted radiation to “zap” tumors.

In the new Fort Collins-based center, already well-developed programs will better deliver patient navigation, oncology counseling and research services to patients. Patients undergoing treatment will choose to socialize with peers, have private family time or enjoy fresh air and mountain views on the second floor.

“We are grateful for this outstanding contribution from Flood and Peterson,” said Kevin Unger, president and CEO of Poudre Valley Hospital. “This gift demonstrates the company’s commitment to our community and will help us continue to advance the quality of cancer care in northern Colorado.”

UCHealth, a partnership of Poudre Valley Health System and University of Colorado Hospital, enhances services to cancer patients by strengthening the ongoing partnership between community and academic physicians. Specifically, the affiliation will expand research access for patients, building on over a decade of partnership with University of Colorado Cancer Center, Colorado's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.
