PVH and MCR ranked among best hospitals in Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (July 16, 2013) – U.S. News & World Report announced July 16 that Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies are ranked among the seven best hospitals in Colorado for treating the most challenging patients.

In its annual rankings – a popular consumer source for gauging the quality of America’s hospitals – U.S. News listed 270-bed PVH in Fort Collins as the fourth best and 166-bed MCR in Loveland as the seventh best out of the state’s 100 hospitals.

George Hayes, MCR president and CEO, said the rankings will help guide patients who face difficult conditions and added risk due to health problems. “The rankings help the public recognize that our mission is to improve the lives of our patients in both big and small ways,” he said. “We’re constantly focused on providing the very best quality and safety for our patients.”

PVH and MCR are part of University of Colorado Health (UCHealth), a nonprofit health care system that includes five hospitals and dozens of clinics throughout Colorado. University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), the academic medical center of UCHealth, is ranked as the #1 hospital in Colorado.

“University of Colorado Health is unique in that we offer every specialty and every service a patient might need, from primary care and community services to advanced clinical trials and surgeries available nowhere else,” said UCHealth CEO Bruce Schroffel. “As the U.S. News ranking shows, all our locations focus on quality and on bringing health – not just health care – to our patients.

U.S. News cited five MCR and seven PVH specialties as high-performing services that are exceptionally skilled in treating the most difficult cases. U.S. News ranked five specialties at University of Colorado Hospital among the nation’s best and nine other specialties as “high performing”.

U.S. News’ list of “high performing” specialties at UCHealth hospitals:

U.S. News ranked five specialties at UCH among the nation’s best including Pulmonology (2nd), Cancer (23rd), Orthopedics (28th), Kidney disorders (32nd) and Neurology & Neurosurgery (46th).

“I want to thank our nurses, physicians and staff for their constant dedication to providing the very best patient care,” said Kevin Unger, PVH president and CEO. “While it’s a great accomplishment that three UCHealth hospitals are among the best in the state, we’ll never be satisfied. We’ll continue to work unceasingly to improve lives each and every day.”

The annual rankings are based on a U.S. News analysis of more than 5,000 hospitals largely using objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data. This was the 24th year that U.S. News ranked hospitals. For the full list of Colorado hospital rankings visit www.usnews.com/hospitals.
