Member Highlight - Luree Tatum

Aspen Club member, Luree Tatum (age 69), recently came into the Aspen Club office wearing a bright yellow fluorescent shirt, matching socks and royal blue pants. Her hair was tied back in a beautiful pink scarf.

She said, "Colors make me feel and act alive!" Oh, did we tell you her shoes were also royal blue? They were the "barefoot running shoes," the ones with the toes in them. We knew we had to learn more about Luree.

Luree has dealt with many health conditions in her life, many of which would have physically and mentally done most of us in. She recovered completely from a brain tumor in 2010, but still deals with the effects of lupus, fibromyalgia, bursitis and a myriad of cardiovascular conditions.

A few years later she was told she needed another surgery, this time for a degenerative spine. With the prospect of another surgery looming, she decided to face her health situation head on and take charge.

Under the careful watch of trained therapists, she started doing stretching, strengthening and balance exercises and started to walk more. She also consulted with a dietitian who helped her make healthier nutrition choices. "Consistency is the key to all of this," says Luree.

Her success story now includes having lost over 100 pounds and having more energy. She has also cut her medications in half, her pain levels have decreased and she loves the fact that she feels more clear headed, stating, "I think better now!"

Now, any chance Luree gets, she shares how taking these healthy steps helped get her life back. She encourages others to do the same – taking one small step at a time.
