Count On Me golf tournament raises more than $40,000 for cancer center

The fourth annual Count On Me golf tournament held in June raised more than $40,000 to support construction of the cancer center at University of Colorado Health’s Harmony Campus in Fort Collins. The cancer center will provide patients in the community with one-door access to leading-edge cancer treatment, research, support and wellness services.

The golf tournament has been annually organized by community member Tricia Heller and Dr. Regina Brown, a medical oncologist at Poudre Valley Hospital, in honor of Regina’s parents, who died from cancer. Participants this year rallied around the theme “Engaging the Colors of Cancer,” wearing the colors of the cancer awareness ribbons with the most significance for them. Golfers’ attire represented a full spectrum of colors, from pink to honor a loved one with breast cancer, green to recognize someone fighting lymphoma, or blue for colon cancer.

“We gathered as a family, on a mission to raise awareness and resources for a world class cancer center for our entire community,” said Heller and Brown in a joint statement. ”We can certainly say ‘mission success,’ but we cannot say mission complete! We must continue to ‘Engage the Colors of Cancer’ in solidarity as a northern Colorado family dedicated to this project.”

“The energy, generosity and support I saw and felt at the Count on Me tournament is an inspiration to me every day in my battle with breast cancer,” said Mary, a patient from Windsor.  I can’t wait for the day I can walk in the door of the cancer center and meet with all of my wonderful doctors and caregivers in just one place. “Not only will it help me throughout my treatment, but also my family and friends that have been such an incredible amount of help and support to me in my journey.”

Construction is underway on phase two of the cancer center at University of Colorado Health’s Harmony Campus. Once completed, the center will be a hub for world-class outpatient care, part of an expansive network of cancer treatment and support services in northern Colorado. In the facility, already well-developed programs will be positioned to deliver better patient navigation, oncology counseling, and research services to patients. Patients undergoing treatment will choose to socialize with peers, have private family time, or enjoy fresh air and mountain views on the second floor.
