Community update will highlight the latest in world of diabetes

A quick look at diabetes

  • Almost 26 million Americans have diabetes. That’s 8.3 percent of the population.
  • An estimated 7 million Americans with diabetes have not been diagnosed.
  • Diabetes is believed to have an influential role in many heart problems, strokes, high blood pressure,  kidney disease, blindness, nervous system disease and amputations.
  • One in every 400 children has diabetes.
  • The costs of diagnosed diabetes in the United States was $245 billion in 2012.
  • The average medical expenditures for people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than the expenditures for people without diabetes.

Are you at risk?

The American Diabetes Association identifies the following as risk factors of diabetes:

  • Age 45 and older.
  • Member of an ethnic group with a higher risk for the condition (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, Pacific Islander).
  • Being overweight.
  • Blood pressure at or above 140/90.
  • Family history of diabetes.
  • Having had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, or having given birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds.

Medical experts from throughout northern Colorado will be delivering the most recent research and information about diabetes management at the annual Fall Diabetes Community Update on Nov. 9.

The program will be held from 8 a.m.-noon at the Fort Collins Senior Center, 1200 Raintree Drive, Fort Collins. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Center for Diabetes at University of Colorado Health, formerly Poudre Valley Health System.

Three sessions will allow participants to explore various aspects of diabetes.

  • What’s New in Diabetes Medications? by Dr. Michael McDermott, professor of medicine and clinical pharmacy, University of Colorado School of Medicine.
  • The Skinny on Carbs by Jennifer Vissers, clinical diabetes educator, UCHealth Center for Diabetes.
  • An expert panel will feature Dr. Patrick Green, cardiologist, University of Colorado Health; Dr. David Abbey, internal medicine physician, Internal Medicine Clinic of Fort Collins, Dr. David C. Johnson, periodontist, Associates in Periodontics.

The event costs $15, and each person with diabetes may bring a support person for free. Registration is preferred. To register, call 970.495.8205. Walk-ins will be welcomed.

The annual Diabetes Community Update is just one of the services offered through the Center for Diabetes. The center offers several programs that help children and adults learn skills and knowledge to manage diabetes and prevent complications.

Through the program, certified diabetes educators provide education for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes for pregnant women and pre-diabetes. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, the center offers individual appointments and group classes at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland and Greeley Medical Clinic.
