Poudre School District expands employee health options

Poudre School District expands employee health option

By Kelly Tracer, Marketing Strategist

Poudre School District has teamed up with three community partners to help district employees lead healthier lives by providing quick and easy access to health care and complimentary resources to help them better manage their health.

All employees (and dependents) enrolled in the district’s health plan have access to complimentary care at an employee walk-in health clinic. They also are able to take advantage of a full menu of free lifestyle health and wellness services that aim to help employees live healthier lives.

“We have nearly 8,000 people on our medical plan, and we know that some of them don’t access health care even when they are ill because of associated costs,” said Chuck DeWayne, PSD executive director of human resources. “This new clinic has helped remove that barrier. Our goal is to create an environment of preventive care, instead of reactive medical care. This has helped to promote healthy behaviors, reduce costs and limit the number of lost days due to illness and/or health issues.”

Partnership

The district’s new health program is a result of a partnership between the school district, University of Colorado Health, Associates in Family Medicine and Miramont Lifestyle Fitness.

The University of Colorado Health Walk-in Clinic is a place where employees are able to seek care for minor illnesses and injuries for free. The clinic offers extended hours into the evenings and on weekends so employees and their families can get the care they need even if they can’t get in to see their primary care provider right away or if something comes up beyond traditional medical office hours.

Located at 2211 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins – the current site of Urgent Care at Miramont – the clinic is managed by Associates in Family Medicine. The staff at the clinic coordinates care with the employees’ primary care providers by sending updates on treatment regimens after each visit and forwarding all lab test results. There is no charge for the clinic visits, although some charges, such as lab tests, radiology imaging and medical equipment, may be applied to the employee’s United Medical Alliance plan.

New to school district

The walk-in clinic is one component of the school district’s new Integrated Health Management System.

The lifestyles health services component includes one-on-one health coaching and nutritional counseling for those who have or are at risk for chronic illnesses. These services are provided by Miramont Lifestyle Fitness.

The one section of the new health program that is available to all employees, regardless of whether they qualify for benefits, is the wellness services component. These services, which are provided by Miramont and UCHealth, include classes on a variety of topics, including nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and yoga.

Dan Robinson, the chief executive officer of Colorado Health Medical Group, said the school district is transforming the role an employer can have in the health of employees.

“This is a proactive approach that shows the district is committed to getting employees healthy and keeping them healthy. Plus, it’s a creative way for the district to take charge of its health care costs and give employees ways to save money at the same time,” Robinson said.
