MCR earns Magnet designation
Medical Center of the Rockies has earned the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the gold standard for nursing excellence in health care.

MCR, part of Poudre Valley Health System, is the first hospital in Loveland, Colo., to earn the Magnet honor and the eighth in Colorado. Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., also part of PVHS, was the first Magnet hospital in Colorado.

There are 377 other Magnet-designated hospitals in the U.S. – about 6 percent of the nation’s 6,000 hospitals.

The Magnet honor comes in the first year MCR was eligible to apply. MCR opened in February 2007; hospitals need two full years of quality data to submit an application.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center delivered the news this morning. Its appraisers conducted a site visit at MCR in late August.

“The creation of a culture and infrastructure that supports excellence in the delivery of high quality patient- and family-centered care has been my vision since accepting this position five years ago,” said Kay Miller, the chief nursing officer at Medical Center of the Rockies. “Staff engagement, their passion for excellence, their compassion, caring and competence and, above all, their focus on delivering world-class health care is why Medical Center of the Rockies is being recognized today.”

The Magnet designation “provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive,” according to the ANCC.

The designation also recognizes hospitals that deliver nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice.

About MCR and the Magnet journey

Medical Center of the Rockies is a 136-bed hospital in Loveland, Colo., about 45 miles north of Denver. It opened February 14, 2007, and specializes in heart and trauma care. The hospital is a part of Poudre Valley Health System.

Since its beginning, MCR has focused on the foundations of nursing excellence. In the planning stages MCR’s construction, nurses were included in the building design and traveled around the country, working with architects and contractors to build a world-class healthcare facility.

From the early stages, the PVHS board and the hospital’s senior management group wanted to design an organization that not only provided an exceptional building (MCR is LEED Gold certified) but maintained an excellent culture using the concepts of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which PVHS earned in 2008, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program to recruit and retain quality staff.

To implement this model, MCR Chief Nursing Officer Kay Miller established a Nursing Practice Council, which included a Magnet Steering Committee to guide MCR through the Magnet journey. Nursing committees were established as an interdisciplinary structure, understanding that nursing does not operate effectively in any organization without collaboration, integration and cooperation.

“The Magnet designation is further proof of the world-class care patients can expect when they come to Medical Center of the Rockies,” said MCR CEO George Hayes. “This obviously could not have happened without nurses, staff, physicians, volunteers -- everyone demonstrating superior outcomes from the minute MCR was opened,” PVHS CEO Rulon Stacey wrote on his blog, Visionary Healthcare (
