Call System

Family Medicine Center call system

For maximum flexibility and learning, the Fort Collins Family Medicine Center has a Night Float system for all residents.

Two residents are on call each night -- one first-year resident and one second- or third-year resident.

Night-float call

Residents designed the "night-float" system to give patients the advantage of continuous care from a single physician and facilitate the experience of providing ongoing hospital care at Poudre Valley Hospital.

As a first-year resident, you will work an evening shift hospital rotation (5 p.m. to 7 a.m.) in lieu of the conventional call system. You will be scheduled for night-float in one-week or two-week blocks.

While you're on night-float call, you will not have daytime responsibilities. Each first-year resident will spend 8-9 weeks on night float. Night-float duties include covering all hospital teaching services, Family Medicine Center and Salud/Children's Clinic emergency department visits for patients and families, as well as admitting patients for these services. Weekends are covered by a rotating call system.

Second- and third-year residents share a night float schedule. Each resident has 4 weeks of night float spread out over the year, one week at a time. Friday nights are the only night covered by traditional call, usually covered by the resident rotating on OB or Peds. Specific services such as trauma surgery and critical care may require additional call on their service.
