How do places like the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society track cancer incidence throughout our country? By working with certified Cancer Registrars, whose job it is to track cancer cases in local hospital settings.
The Poudre Valley Cancer Network has three Cancer Registrar positions dedicated to abstracting confidential cancer case information for reporting to state and national agencies. This important work helps track rates of cancer and other information trends related to cancer and cancer treatment.
Poudre Valley Hospital established one of the first cancer registries in Colorado and continues to be evaluated as a leading program by the American College of Surgeons - Commission on Cancer.
The Cancer Registry coordinates Poudre Valley Cancer Network's Cancer Committee in accordance with ACS-COC requirements. Cancer Committee is composed of cancer doctors and allied health professionals that meet on a regular basis to ensure adherence to Commission on Cancer standards, promote new technologies, develop new programs and generally foster excellence in cancer care. For our most recent ACS-COC survey, we were the only cancer program in Colorado to attain an Outstanding Achievement Award.
The Cancer Registry is also responsible for coordinating bi-weekly Tumor Board conferences and weekly Breast Cancer Tumor Board. These meetings provide physicians and allied health professionals with the opportunity to discuss care recommendations for cancer patients. Multi-disciplinary experts review current methods of treatment, available clinical trials, patient outcomes, case management, and staging. Patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. The doctors from the major cancer specialties include medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery, pathology and radiology. This multidisciplinary collaboration among Tumor Board attendees offers valuable benefits to our patients.
The Tumor Board also serves as an educational forum to share new information about advances in cancer technologies, treatment methodologies, and research trials as such information relates to the cancer care of individual patients.
