We would like to welcome our new First year residents.

First year

Breanna Berry, D.O, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, Glendale

As a Colorado native, I am thrilled to be back in the Rocky Mountains. I've always known I would move back to Colorado but I told myself I would never do so at the expense of my training. Luckily I ended up getting the best of both worlds. I immediately felt at home with the residents, faculty and staff here. I was looking for an unopposed full spectrum residency program with extra exposure in OB, opportunities for more procedural training and a learning environment conducive to the residents-all of which are offered at this program. Side note-I think PVH has some of the best cafeteria food ever! I am excited to begin residency in this town and can't wait to build lifelong friendships. It will be so nice to enjoy the Colorado summers after spending the past decade in the heat of AZ. I hope to take advantage of Mother Nature and her abundant outdoor playground. In addition to my outdoor hobbies, I enjoy traveling, reading, & spending time with my family and friends.

Davis Blanton, M.D, The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Greenville.

I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians, so after 4 years in the flat coastal plains, I was ready to get back to the mountains. When I visited my cousin in Fort Collins for the Bohemian Nights music festival, I knew immediately that I had found my new home. Before medical school, I taught high school in rural Arkansas and developed a love for serving in rural communities. This residency program has everything that I was looking for to be able to get back to a small town one day.  There is excellent training in full-spectrum family medicine and a community atmosphere makes everyone feel welcome. I know that I will finish with the skills and experience that I need to practice anywhere I go. I enjoy fishing, hiking, biking, cooking, playing sports, and just about anything that puts me on the water. Fort Collins is an incredible town that offers everything for work and play, and I couldn’t be happier to be here!

Joshua A. Dekker, D.O, Touro University, Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine, Henderson.

I grew up in small town Utah and knew at a very young age that I wanted to be a doctor.  My town had only family physicians who did everything from coughs and colds to delivering babies.  I always knew that I wanted to do the same thing.  After visiting Fort Collins during interview season, I loved the full spectrum training that the program provides, the beautiful area and especially the people.  My wife, a former elementary teacher, loved the school system and the rest is history.  We are so excited to be in Fort Collins. My wife and I have 2 children and we are looking forward to everything this incredible place has to offer.

Elizabeth E. Hauslein, M.D, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago.

Central Illinois is where I call home. I ventured away from the cornfields of Illinois to Michigan where I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology. During that time I traveled to Ecuador to study abroad for six months which is where I developed a fondness for salsa dancing. I then returned to the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Once I determined that family medicine was for me, my fiancé, Jackson, and I decided to explore residencies in Colorado. The program in Fort Collins caught my attention because it is dedicated to training well-rounded family doctors. It offers diverse electives and the residents and staff enjoy one another. Having never visited Fort Collins until my interview day, I instantly fell in love with the the downtown and was excited about all of the outdoor activities Jackson and I would have at our fingertips – hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, snowboarding - not to mention the amazing view. I am excited to start my training here in Fort Collins.

Shannon E. Jantz, M.D, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Denver.

Growing up in Colorado I love the mountains and outdoors and feel so lucky to have been able to attend both medical school and now residency in this amazing state. I am excited to explore Fort Collins ice cream and brewery selections. (The former because who doesn't love ice cream? The latter later because my husband is a brewer.) We also look forward to enjoying the great outdoor activities.  I can't wait to meet my fellow residents and get started on this hard but hopefully amazing year.

Joshua Rusk, M.D, University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City.
My wife, Brianne, and I are excited to be in Fort Collins, Colorado.
We're mountain people. The mountains are what we love. They're where we spend our time. We got engaged on the top of a mountain and were married on top of a mountain - end of story....or maybe just the beginning.  We couldn't be happier ending up in Fort Collins on the other side of the Rocky's with such abundant recreation, beauty, and job opportunities such as the Fort Collins Family Medicine Residency Program and the Poudre School District.  If you don't find us in the hospital, clinic, or science classroom, we'll be out riding on the roads or trails with our dog, Canyon, fishing in Poudre Canyon, sailing, skiing, climbing, visiting our families in Utah (while doing one of these other things), or brewing beer as founders of the 'Dr. Recommended Brewing Co.'   Thanks for checking us out!

2nd year

Liz Banowetz, M.D., University of California at Davis School of Medicine, Davis, Calif.

After visiting many community family practice residencies on the west coast, I chose Fort Collins because of its friendly environment, excellent training, and great location. With the program's dedication to providing experience in all fields, I knew that I could practice wherever I wanted after graduation and feel confident with my knowledge and skills. The OB, mental health, and procedural training are more in depth here than at other programs I visited, and I was impressed by how dedicated the staff and faculty are to maintaining a well-rounded experience for all the residents. My husband and I love being close to hiking, biking, and many other outdoor activities, but if I don't feel like a hike on my day off there are many places to go in town for entertainment, dining, and shopping. Fort Collins has an intimate, small-town feel with all the big city amenities, which reminds me of my hometown of Redding, California. So far I've had a great time here on my days off and excellent education when I'm working. Couldn't ask for more from a residency program!

Lindsey Gerdes, D.O. MPH, Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Vallejo, Calif.

Haikus aside, I truly believe excellent, full-scope family doctors are the heart and soul of quality healthcare. The challenging and rewarding curriculum as well as the support system are exactly what brought me to Fort Collins - that and the micro-brew selection, general outdoor activity Smorgasbord, and proximity to family and friends. My free time is generally spent combining those things, hanging out with my dog, and playing on our star-studded co-ed soccer team

Courtney King, M.D., Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Augusta, Ga.
I

I came for an interview in Fort Collins because of the proximity to great skiing, the number of days of sunshine and the not-too-big, not-too-small size of the town. I decided to do my residency here because of the friendly, environmentally progressive, and fun attitude of the community, the unopposed broad education that the program provides, and the awesomeness of the other residents! I am originally from Atlanta, Ga., and I most recently lived in Arcata, Ca., but I have lived and traveled all over the world, and I am excited to now call Fort Collins home.

Nikolas May, MD, University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, Iowa

Growing up on a dairy farm in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, my idea of a great doctor was that of the rural Family Medicine physician. Transplanted to the cornfields of Iowa, I continued my education at the University of Iowa for both undergrad and med school. My search for a good unopposed rural medicine training program led me to Fort Collins, where I was impressed with the great full-spectrum training that the residents receive here, with lots of OB and plenty of procedures. The faculty and staff here are the friendliest you will meet anywhere, which makes for an excellent learning atmosphere. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Kellie, watching baseball, hiking the beautiful Rocky Mountains and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Dale Rellas, MD, University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas

I was born and raised in Plano, Texas, so I know firsthand that it's hard for most Texans to leave the state. Having said that, I knew it would be a privilege and a great opportunity to join the Fort Collins Family Medicine Residency Program, and I'm excited to be here. I was attracted to so many things about the program- the people, the full-scope curriculum in an unopposed setting, and the fact that family practitioners are so well regarded in the area were just a few of the perks. While I'm still unsure as to the type of environment I will likely practice in, it's comforting to know that Fort Collins will prepare me for anything in the future. When I'm not working, you will most likely find me fly fishing and exploring the endless rivers and lakes that this unique and beautiful area has to offer. I also enjoy biking, golfing, and cooking.

T.J. Seneker, MD, Tennessee State University College of Medicine, Johnson City, Tenn.
.

I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. I went to undergrad at Furman University and majored in Philosophy and then headed back to East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine for medical school. My wife, Julie, and I were looking for a change of scenery and we decided to come to Fort Collins after I did a one month Sub-I here. We love the proximity of outdoor activities and have been backpacking, climbing, and paddling as much as we can. Living close to the downtown also has some perks as we can bike to restaurants and live music, enjoying the fine Colorado weather. I am excited about learning and working here for the next three years with such a broad range of experiences that one can receive at the Fort Collins Family Medicine Program. I believe that the well-rounded training inherent here will allow me to feel comfortable working in a rural community one day. Bio coming soon!

Amber Steves, MD, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, Ariz.
r

I grew up worshiping the sun in Arizona, but I escaped the heat and went to Baylor University in Texas for my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience. After a few too many hurricanes and tornadoes, I headed back to the desert for medical school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Although I loved being close to family and friends, I wanted a residency program that was unopposed, prepared residents for rural medicine, and whose residents and faculty had a good balance between work and play. I did a 4th year elective rotation in Fort Collins and fell in love with the town, the program and the people. My dog, boyfriend and I spend our free time enjoying the outdoors hiking, camping, fishing, or just relaxing on the patios of the local breweries. The valley of the sun may have beautiful saguaro cacti, but the Rockies and FCFMR are my home now!

Third year

Edmundo Manrique, M.D., University of Denver School of Medicine, Denver, Colo.

I'm a recent graduate from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. After completing my intern year at St. Joseph's in Chicago, I'm very excited about joining FCFMRP. What attracted me to the residency is the quality of the residents, graduates, and full scope of training. I also really love the location as Fort Collins is a great place to live with lots of outdoor activities and friendly people. When I have free time, I like hanging out with my kids, working out, and playing soccer.

Benjamin R. Oldson, D.O., Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, Downers Grove, Ill.

I was attracted to FCFMRP’s full-scope training, the quality of the residents, the emphasis on lifestyle medicine and mental health, and the mountains. During the latter half of medical school, I realized that I wanted/needed additional training in general medicine, and I wanted to further explore medicine from a broad perspective. Regardless of future practice environment, I felt that the system here in Fort Collins would lead me on a good path. Originally from Iowa, I have lived more recently in Austin, Texas, and Chicago. During downtime, I enjoy hiking with my German shepherd, old cars, and wine tasting.

Katie L. Rutledge, M.D., University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Denver, Colo.

I am a Colorado native, hailing originally from Colorado Springs where I attended Colorado College. After a brief stint out east, I knew I wanted to come back home for my medical training. I am a recent graduate from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. My husband and I loved our four years in Denver and are happy to be staying on the Front Range with our new daughter. I love Colorado: the unbeatable weather, the gorgeous mountains and outdoor sports, and the closeness to my family. The Fort Collins Family Medicine Residency Program appealed to me because of the friendly, supportive relationship among the residents and the confidence that trainees felt in starting their careers. I know it will prepare me well for my future, during which I hope to practice rural family medicine in an underserved community.

Heidi M. Thompson, M.D., University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, N.Y.

I was born and raised in a small town outside of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, and then headed out east for medical school. I am excited to be in Fort Collins and back in the mountains. Coming from a family of nine kids and growing up in a small town, it wasn’t much of a surprise to people when I decided to go into family medicine. The Family Medicine program here in Fort Collins was my top choice because it encompasses the broad spectrum practice I want to have, from delivering babies to taking care of the elderly and everything in between. Also, being a graduate from the University of Rochester, home of the biopsychosocial model of medicine, I appreciate the importance of considering not just diseases, but the whole person, including mental, emotional and social aspects.

Mark R. Wisthoff, D.O., Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, Downers Grove, Ill.

As a Colorado native, I am really excited to be back here after being in Chicago for the last 4 years. I grew up in Pueblo, Colo., and attended Colorado State University for undergraduate and graduate work in exercise physiology and nutrition. I absolutely love the mountains, hiking, biking, and just about anything outdoors. The residency program at Poudre Valley Hospital is perfect for me, and I am eager to begin work. My clinical interests lie in sports medicine, managing diet, nutrition, and exercise, as well as Type II diabetes.

Brandon W. Wright, M.D., Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, Lubbock, Texas

Hey guys…Brandon here. Don’t let my sun-sensitive skin fool you, but I am native to the southwest United States. Born and raised in Albuquerque, N.M., I was taught early to enjoy all four seasons that the year had to offer. Wanting to enjoy summers that were a little less “surface of the sun-like” led me to come to Fort Collins to do my undergrad in biological science at Colorado State University. I absolutely fell in love with the town, enough so that I decided to stay an extra year to complete a master’s degree in biomedical science before leaving for the dusty plains of Texas for medical school. My four-year stint in Lubbock and El Paso, Texas, told me one thing: I have got to get back to Fort Collins. And the lucky thing is, they have an amazing family medicine program here, the one branch of medicine that I could see myself doing. As I begin my intern year, I am planning on filling all of that free time that I will be getting with biking, hiking, playing my guitar, and barbecuing. If anyone wants a burger or fajitas, just let me know. I am open to any questions any one has for me about the city, the program, family medicine in general, hot dogs, whatever. Thanks!
