Physicians prescribe Amiodarone and other medications (called anti-arrhythmics) to treat and prevent certain types of abnormal heart rhythms. Taking Amiodarone causes overactive heart muscles to relax, pausing longer between beats. The longer pause allows the heart to fill more completely and to more efficiently pump blood throughout the body.

Antiarrhythmic medications are prescribed for patients who have abnormally fast heartbeats related to:

• Severe ventricular and supraventricular tachycardia.
• Atrial or ventricular fibrillation.
• Cardiac arrest.

The Amiodarone clinic at Heart Center of the Rockies is designed to assist with the coordination and monitoring of patients using the Amiodaron medication.  Here, nurses help arrange blood work and follow up pulmonary testing as directed by the physician.
