Dipping bird times

Here's a two-part menu that is easy to make and will give your child a change of pace for lunch.
  • Pack in baby carrots and sliced celery so they can be dipped in light ranch dressing.
  • And pack in a sliced apple, banana or peach for dipping into low-fat fruit yogurt.

Add in a bottle or thermos of water or low-fat milk.

While we're talking about dipping birds...

Remember those dipping birds that were so popular a few years ago? You may still have one. If not, think about getting one for your child; there's a good science lesson to be learned.

The dipping birds, also known as drinking birds, are toy heat engines that mimic the motions of a bird drinking from a fountain or other water source. Some people incorrectly think of them as perpetual motion machines.

The dipping bird was invented by a scientist in 1945. The birds have been used in numerous movies and TV shows, including The Simpsons and Family Guy.
