If you discover that your baby has a cleft lip or cleft palate, you will meet with our team of experts prior to your baby's delivery. Deb Brohard, SLP and Cleft Palate Team Coordinator will help you understand what will happen after your baby is born.
If your baby is born at Poudre Valley Hospital or Medical Center of the Rockies with a cleft lip or palate, Deb will visit you right away. She will provide you with information as well as alert a feeding specialist, who will also visit with you immediately to teach you about the special techniques and tools you'll need to feed your baby.
Deb will also arrange for surgeons Dr. Christopher Tsoi or Dr. Mark Boustred to meet with you within 24 hours of the birth of your baby to discuss the surgical repair schedule. Lip repair is usually done when the baby is 10 weeks old and weighs at least 10 pounds. Palate repair takes place when the baby is 6 to 18 months old.
