Following a healthy diet after bariatric surgery is paramount to overall success. Because bariatric surgery is simply a tool in the weight-loss journey, healthy eating-for long-term success-must become a life-long habit. One's commitment to following a healthy diet after bariatric surgery and making a lifestyle change ultimately determines the success.
The three main types of bariatric surgery are different, but they both significantly reduce the size of the stomach. As a result, the life-long diet after bariatric surgery is the same:
- Eat less more often (three meals and three snacks each day).
- Chew each bite thoroughly and take time to eat (sometimes it's helpful to set a timer for two minutes).
- No sugar.
- No grazing.
- 60-75 grams of protein per day (a protein supplement, such as a protein bar or shake, is often necessary).
- 60 ounces of fluid per day (be mindful to sip, not gulp).
- Focus and be mindful of eating.
Additionally, there are specific vitamin requirements for gastric bypass surgery, LAP-BAND® surgery and sleeve gastrectomy patients, as well as exercise goals.
