The American Diabetes Association identifies these factors that can increase a person's risk of having diabetes:
- Age 45 and older.
- Member of an ethnic group with a higher risk for the condition (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, Pacific Islander).
- Being overweight.
- Blood pressure at or above 140/90.
- Family history of diabetes.
- Having had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, or having given birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds.
