Preparing For Your CT Scan
How you prepare for your CT scan depends on the type of scan scheduled and the specific study, or studies, your doctor has requested. Please bring a list of medications you are taking with you to your appointment. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an implanted medical device, such as: Pacemaker, defibrillator, pain pump, or insulin pump. Check your specific procedure below to find more detailed preparation instructions.
Abdomen: Do not eat or drink anything for three hours before procedure. Drink the oral contrast as instructed.
Biopsies/Drains: Patient can drink water up to four hours before procedure. Do not eat solid food for 8 hours before procedure.
Brain/Sinuses/Facial Bones/IACs (Inner Ear): No special preparation, unless CT includes intravenous contrast. In that case, do not eat anything for three hours before procedure. You may drink water up until the time of your procedure.
Chest: Do not eat anything for three hours before procedure. You may drink water during this time.
CTA (CT Angiogram): Do not eat anything for three hours before procedure. You may drink water during this time. You do not need to drink oral contrast.
Extremities: No special preparation.
Pelvis: Do not eat or drink anything for three hours before procedure. Drink the oral contrast as instructed.
Spine/Neck: No special preparation.
