Information for New Nursing Graduates

Information for new nursing graduates

2008 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient
Poudre Valley Hospital, a Magnet Recipient since 2000

Best Places to Work in Healthcare

Congratulations on completing your nursing program. Here's some information on applying at PVHS:

  • We invite new graduates to search for and apply online for positions. Please apply for positions that do not require previous RN experience and offer at least 64 hours per pay period (every two weeks). Some positions will specify "New Grads May Apply" and some may state that "No Previous Experience Is Required."
  • We remove positions as they fill and put positions on hold when the hiring manager has enough qualified candidates.
  • We recommend that new graduates include letters of recommendation from clinical educators and past/present employers with their application.

New graduate orientations

PVHS offers comprehensive orientation to help ensure new graduates feel comfortable joining our program. Graduate-nurse orientation programs build on your nursing education with a package of activities that helps prepare you for practice on your new unit and shift.

Orientation lasts eight to 10 weeks in most medical and surgical nursing units. It begins with day-shift immersion, where new grads learn unit-specific procedures and specialized clinical techniques, plus hospital policies and computer systems. Orientation also covers such skills as time management, communication and teamwork.

Critical care orientation

On critical care units, orientation lasts three to six months, depending on experience. More time may be needed to finish required certifications. Much of this training is self-paced and computer-based. It includes hands-on instruction: at the bedside, during surgery and critical care procedures and in the classroom.

New graduate ER residency program

PVHS offers a special opportunity for new graduates interested in a career in emergency services. If we have positions available, we offer six-month residencies in the emergency department in March and September at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.

This program provides hands-on and classroom experiences through a collaborative, caring relationship. New graduate RNs have a chance to relate theory with practice through layered learning, development of personal and professional self and professional relations. This position requires a strong, flexible work ethic, and a compassionate, engaged individual. We provide two clinical and one didactic shifts per week, depending upon results of a needs assessment and system-wide learning experience. If available, new graduate ER residency positions are posted on the PVHS jobs page.
