Bariatric Surgery

LAP-BAND® Surgery Benefits

How does LAP-BAND® help?

LAP-BAND® surgery patients typically lose 50 percent of excess weight within one to two years post-surgery and maintain a substantial weight loss with improvements in or resolution of obesity-related conditions for years afterward.

Additional benefits from LAP-BAND surgery include:

  • Improvement of life expectancy by 89 percent (1)

  • Decreased risk of premature death by 30 to 40 percent (2)

  • Dramatic reduction in risk of death from obesity-related diseases (3), including:

    • Type II diabetes, decreased or resolved in 86.6 percent of patients (4)
    • Coronary artery disease, decreased in 56 percent of patients
    • Obstructive sleep apnea, decreased in 85 percent of patients
    • Cancer, decreased in 60 percent of patients
    • Hypertension, decreased in 75 percent of patients
    • Hyperlipidemia/cholesterolemia, decreased or resolved in 93 percent of patients.

  • Long-term studies (10 to 14 years post-surgery) show that morbidly obese patients who had surgery maintained a much greater weight loss and more favorable levels of diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension as compared to those who did not have surgery. (5)
