Pacemakers - what to expect in the procedure area

The second stop during the pacemaker implantation process is the procedure area. Here, the following will occur:

  • Your heart rhythm, blood pressure and oxygen levels will be measured continuously throughout the procedure.
  • A nurse will administer sedation through your IV before the start of the procedure. You should be sleepy and comfortable during the procedure but always able to communicate with the staff / physician if needed.
  • After you are sedated, the physician will inject a small amount of local anesthetic to numb the insertion area on your chest. This may sting for a few moments. After this area is numb, you should experience very little discomfort through the rest of the case. If you do experience any discomfort, it is important to communicate this with the team of people taking care of you.
  • It is very important to keep your hands down at your sides at all times to maintain sterility during the case. Light restraints will be placed on your wrists to remind you to not reach up during the case.
