University of Colorado Health helps the local Red Cross help flood victims

With the intention of making a difference in the lives of those affected by the September floods, University of Colorado Health has offered its support with a $50,000 donation the American Red Cross.

George Hayes, president and CEO of Medical Center of the Rockies, presented Erin Mounsey, executive director of the Northern Colorado American Red Cross, with the donation from UCHealth.

The donation will help support local flood recovery efforts, shelter operations and recovery kits. The funds also will provide ongoing support for individuals and families affected by the floods.

The American Red Cross continues to reach out to those affected by the floods from Estes Park to Sterling. The organization has provided shelter to almost 800 people, totaling 5,000 overnight stays. Thanks to the American Red Cross, volunteers from around the country are on site to support the northern Colorado communities.

“Many people in northern Colorado were impacted or know someone who was impacted by the floods in September,” Hayes said. “We’re excited to see so many people coming together to rebuild. We’re happy we’re in a position where we can help our friends, our neighbors and our community.”

In addition to the financial contribution, UCHealth offers flood resources, including videos about contaminated floodwater, how to cope with natural disasters and how the system’s emergency medical services team helps in natural disasters. UCHealth also helped patients in Estes Park by flying physicians to the area from Loveland via helicopter, bypassing roads that were washed out during the flood.
