Dr. William Neff

William A. Neff, M.D.

Chief medical officer and interim CEO of University of Colorado Health.

William Neff, M.D. is the chief medical officer and interim CEO of University of Colorado Health. Prior to joining the PVHS staff as its first chief medical officer, Dr. Neff held a number of positions on the PVHS board of directors beginning in 2004, and served as board chair in 2007 until his appointment as chief medical officer/vice president in March 2008.

Dr. Neff began his clinical practice of anesthesiology in 1990, and in 1998 was a founding partner of Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professional Consultants, an active clinical practice in Fort Collins, Colo., where, as the managing partner, his focus is on cardiac, pediatric and high-risk cases.

Dr. Neff's extensive PVHS medical staff experience began in 1992 when he became vice chair of the department of anesthesiology. Since then he has served as a member, vice chair and chair of several committees including chief of medical staff and chair of the medical executive committee.

Prior to beginning his clinical practice, Dr. Neff served as assistant professor, anesthesiology, at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas (1986-1990), where his emphasis was on cardiovascular (adult and pediatric) anesthesia, and where he served as co-medical director, surgical intensive care.

Dr. Neff, a Will Rice Fellow, graduated cum laude with a degree in biochemistry from Rice University, Houston, Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He served his residency in anesthesiology there as well, and in 1986 was named chief resident and outstanding resident. In 1987 he did his fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesia and surgical intensive care at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston/University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

Dr. Neff currently has the following licensure/memberships:

  • Diplomat, American Board of Anesthesiology, certified 197
  • Member, Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists
  • Member, Larimer County Medical Society, Colorado Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association
  • Member, American College of Physician Executives

A native of Texas, Dr. Neff lives in Fort Collins with his wife, Debra, a pediatrician, and their four daughters.
